Breathe. Stretch. Shake. Let It Go.

July 27, 2021

Read Time: 1 minute, 36 seconds

Last Thursday morning, I sat legs-crossed on my yoga mat, setting my intention for the day, and the words, “Find your breath.” came to me. In an instant, my body followed suit and adjusted to a state of relief. My shoulders relaxed, my jaws unclenched, and I began to focus on my breath. As I  concentrated steadily on my breathing, I sensed a weight lift off my shoulders. Taking a 30 seconds to find my breath allowed me to start my day with a sense of calmness and mindfulness.

Do y’all remember the song, “Breathe, Stretch, Shake” by Mase and Diddy? This is our wellness vibe for the week. We are taking breathing, stretching, and shaking to a whole ‘nother level. A self-care level.

While acts of self-care are often reduced to spa days and shopping sprees, some of the most fulfilling self-care practices are free ninety-nine and can be easily added to our daily routines. Don't get me wrong, a little retail therapy ain't never hurt nobody but practices that center movement and breath control are simple yet radical acts of self-care.

How often do we take the time to hit pause during our busy days and check-in with ourselves?

We may not realize it in real time but our bodies keep the score. We hold stress in the form of muscle tension in our shoulders, necks, backs, heads, etc. Dedicating a quick 30 seconds to finding our breath allows us to assess our physical, mental, and spiritual state. It also heightens our self-awareness so that we can gauge whether we are pouring from an empty cup.

Now, it's your turn

Today, take a moment to find your breath. Pause and check-in with yourself.

Lower your brows, relax your shoulders, unclench your butt cheeks, lower your tongue from the roof of your mouth and relax your jaws. Inhale. Exhale. And find your breath.
