Brown Sugar Baby: Adding Neutrals To Your Wardrobe

As I lean into using style as a form of self-expression, I often reflect on the ways in which my culture and upbringing serve as sources of inspiration. As a teen, I remember questioning my mother’s fashion sense because she often wore colors like brown and beige.
From the eyes of an adolescent, brown was boring, bland, and simple. In hindsight, I recognize the ways my youth and ignorance blinded me from appreciating the beauty and depth that brown offered.
And so now, I know that brown represents; warmth, strength, and resilience. As we prepare for the winter season where neutral colors are more popular, incorporating brown into your wardrobe can enhance your look.
This week, I channeled a holiday party inspired aesthetic and paired a brown satin blouse with satin green floral printed trousers and suede brown boots.


This loose-fit satin chocolate brown blouse from Na-kd gave me holiday-feels. The color, fit, and textile of the blouse radiates sophistication. To be completely honest, it was the details for me. The high neck feature coupled with the puffy sleeves and pleated details at the shoulder emits class and makes the item ideal for formal and occasion wear. This blouse is a perfect example of how brown can be paired with textiles like satin and silk to achieve a grown and sexy vibe. 


These Zara satin green floral printed trousers are one of my all-time favorite pieces. The pants are a part of a suit set so picture the two together.

I couldn’t bless y’all with THAT much sauce so I’ll save that ensemble for another time. But back to the task at hand, the trousers’ traditional fit juxtaposed against its floral patterned design makes it an attention sparker and conversation starter.

Some of us shy away from purchasing statement pieces because they may seem overwhelming and difficult to style. However, my cheat code to styling statement pieces, similar to the pants I have on here is pairing them with neutral colors like shades of brown, beige, ivory, taupe, and even black.


I decided to keep the footwear neutral-colored as well. Incorporating the light brown suede boots obviously completed my holiday aesthetic.
