Insecure-tea: Could Issa’s Decision To Choose Herself Over Nathan And Lawrence Lead To Another Glow-Up?

December 21, 2021

This week’s episode of Insecure was A-MAZ-ING and arguably the best episode of this season. As we watched Nathan and Lawrence take passive jabs at one another for the sake of Issa’s “love” *clears throat* or better yet, a fight between their egos. I could not help but be both, happy to witness two men fight for her and concerned for her peace of mind.

Considering Issa’s love life has been the core storyline for the past four seasons, we are no strangers to its messiness and complex romance. But this week’s episode turned the heat up a notch. As Issa begins to plan a life with her new boo, Nathan, she finds that she may still want that old thing back. Her connection, history, and love for her ex-boyfriend, Lawrence, leave a smidge of reluctance in her decision to fully move forward with Nathan.

Did I mention that after Issa and Lawrence broke up, he had a baby with another woman he was once dating but is no longer with? *shakes head and rolls eyes* Yes, the plot thickens. But what else is new?

While Insecure viewers lobby for Issa to choose between Team Nathan or Team Lawrence, I take a different stance. While I would love for Issa and Lawrence to rekindle their relationship, I am Team Issa. Given Issa’s lingering uncertainty about her love interests, it may be best for her to take a step away from the mellow-dramatic relationship drama.

In next week’s series finale, I hope to see Issa prioritize her emotional security by deciding to pour more energy and time into herself. This means, not choosing the safe choice (Nathan) or declining to stay with what feels familiar (Lawrence) but leaning into the newness of choosing herself and seeing where it leads her.

Could her expectations around love evolve once she chooses to love on herself? Perhaps. But we will have to wait and see on next week’s episode of Insecure.
